Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Age, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, the crowds, the traffic, and typically bourgeois settings. In this cityscape by Boileou, however, the everyday aspect prevails, the frank and sincere realism of everyday life in a city setting. Human presence is not contemplated, and the artist lets the buildings and objects speak for themselves, protagonists of a direct narrative, unfiltered by idealization.
Boileou's aim is to offer a simplified interpretation of reality, seeking new values of purity in representation. For this reason, his painting style can be described as naïve, yet it expresses itself in a highly classical and traditional manner. His language, in fact, is essentially figurative and finds its broadest expression in the traditional genre of landscape painting. However, the artist manages to infuse tradition with his originality and personal touch, precisely through his pursuit of purity in representation that defines his style. Concretely, this is expressed in a fluid technique that constructs subjects with a few essential yet incisive lines. The application of color remains essentially compact, resolving the work into a harmony of chromatic zones. The palette leans toward decidedly pale hues, full of light.
As we can see from the analysis of this work, Boileou is a substantially realist artist who, however, tends to reduce reality to a schematization of colors and lines in order to achieve values of purity in the representation of reality.
