The iconography of motherhood is closely linked to the subject of the Madonna and Child. It is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna and Child appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century, when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced). It is quite common for contemporary artists to treat the iconography of motherhood without directly linking it to the Christian religion.  The artist behind this work stands out for his exceptional technique within a classicist interpretation of the subject. The artist pursues full naturalism in a very smooth form, avoiding excessive pictorial effects. Thus, the subjects appear to have a precious, almost porcelain-like surface, enlivened by a subtle sfumato. The same tendency toward smooth plasticity can also be seen in the complex definition of the draperies, which are also distinguished by the luminous reflections they emanate. Compositionally, the narrow focus of the scene is particularly interesting, focusing attention on the relationship between mother and child in a calm expression of intimate and domestic feelings.
