Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Era, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation only starting in the 19th century. This type of subject, and specifically the city of Paris, consistently reflects the inclinations of the painter Brasci, whose artistic career is closely linked to Impressionism. Urban landscapes and scenes of city life are, in fact, typical themes of that pictorial movement, which originated and developed in the French capital. It is worth remembering that immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the aspects of modernity represented by landscape: the frenzy of the city, the crowds, the traffic, and the typically bourgeois settings.
Braschi's pictorial style is directly linked to the Impressionist tradition of urban landscapes, taking them to their extremes. Formally, he uses a hatching technique, but this technique helps him achieve a remarkable synthesis of forms. All the objects in the painting are rendered with rapid flashes of color, providing an even more immediate and fleeting representation. In this way, as in Impressionism, the painted surface is designed to capture every subtle vibration of light and atmosphere, but it does so within an even more polychrome and colorful compositional economy. This type of color synthesis essentially brings Braschi's painting style closer to an expressionist and more contemporary conception of his language.
As we can see from an analysis of this painting, the artist Braschi, like some of his illustrious contemporaries such as Giulio De Simone and Antonio De Vity, draws directly from the Impressionist tradition of modern, frenetic urban views. However, he subjects this tradition to a more synthetic and expressionistic reworking, recontextualizing it in a pictorial style more in tune with contemporary times.
