Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of the equestrian monument, or the man on horseback, has very ancient origins. It dates back to the classical world, the earliest example of which is the "Rampin Knight," and it had a fundamental political importance for Roman art. Generally, these are sculptures in the round, but there are also cases where this subject appears on painted supports. The theme of the man on horseback has pervaded the entire history of art, not only Western art, and has become a subject of research for contemporary artists such as Marino Marini, Arturo Martini, and Aligi Sassu.
In this work, we can appreciate Bruni's refined technique in depicting a horse race. The painter distorts reality with expressionistic intent to convey the scene's strong dynamism. The subjects are virtually elongated and squashed by their rapid movement. The figures are synthesized by quick touches of color and are punctuated by bright white flashes.
Bruni, the artist, demonstrates an excellent pictorial technique. He remains essentially faithful to a figurative vocabulary but does not hesitate to creatively shape reality to enhance the expressiveness of his works.
