Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the female figure is an expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the female figure has also been a central figure in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
Bruno Caruso's artistic output is highly distinctive. He focuses primarily on the human figure, but creatively reworks it, adding a touch of surrealism. A constant throughout his work, however, is the use of extraordinary technique combined with an illustrator's imagination. Even in this graphic design, the representation is extremely concrete and solid, with its ostentatious three-dimensionality. Bruno Caruso's fluidity of line gives the depiction an almost obsessive attention to detail.
Bruno Caruso was born in Palermo in 1927 and passed away in Rome in 2018. A painter and engraver, he was also always interested in journalism and publishing. In 1959, he moved to Rome, where he collaborated with Leonardo Sciascia and the photographer Brassai. He taught painting for Rai Storia. He received numerous awards, including the Gold Medal for Culture from the President of the Republic in 2001 and the Archimede Prize, awarded to the most illustrious Sicilians in the world, the following year. The University of Palermo awarded him an honorary degree in Literature and Philosophy in 1986.
