Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as an independent subject began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world, as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers were depicted not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also became a way of interpreting reality.
This work is part of a series of watercolors in which Bruno Coen begins with reality and the recording of sensory data. But on this realist foundation, the artist exercises the investigative action of light, brought about by the diluted color of the watercolor. In this way, Bruno Coen can go beyond the simple phenomenal data, which nevertheless remains perfectly delineated, and seek the true essence of the subject before him. The combined action of color and light gives Bruno Coen's watercolors a strong expressionistic potential, so that the image that emerges is not only external, but also more intimate and hidden. The use of color also consistently reflects the expressionist aesthetic of these works. Indeed, the chromatic choices, based on a predominance of pinks and violets, transcend the sensory to acquire, instead, an emotional and spiritual significance.
Bruno Coen is an artist born in 1939. Especially in his watercolor works, he seeks an expressive line between figuration and abstraction, arriving at an elegant graphic and coloristic solution.
