Description of the work
The iconographic subject of Christ's face has ancient origins and is connected to the legend of Veronica. The episode in which Christ's true likeness was imprinted on a cloth used by a woman to wipe his face is also recounted in the Gospels. This woman was identified as Veronica, likely due to the similarity with the Latin words "Vera Icon." Since the early Christian era, the face of Christ has been the object of particular veneration. Its depiction has pervaded the entire history of Western art. From the first iconic representations of the early Christian and early Middle Ages, we gradually moved on to increasingly naturalistic (beginning with the Renaissance) or realistic (typical of Flemish art) depictions.
In this exquisite work, we can appreciate how the sculpture also reflects the expressionistic style that Bruno Fantini proposes in his paintings. Fantini's expressionism focuses on the deformation of the figure, which is practically crushed by a curved and sinuous compositional line. The result is an unnatural elongation of the face and all its features. Through this expressionistic deformation, Christ's face becomes a suggestive mask of pain, and the effect is further accentuated by the sculptural work's inherent plasticity. Indeed, while in paintings, pictorial synthesis reduced everything to a two-dimensional dimension, in this sculpture the subject becomes a concrete object in space, with an even more relevant and engaging depiction of his painful expression.
Bruno Fantini is a painter originally from Comacchio who, in his work, has primarily focused on his homeland, both landscape and social themes. His artistic style is characterized by a harsh expressionism based on the deformation of subjects in compositions with a curved linear rhythm and a dark color palette.
