Description of the work
Description of the work
The work depicts two horses in a dynamic, tense pose. The subjects' bodies are stylized, not realistically depicted, but with simplified, decisive forms. The artist captures energy and movement, creating an image that suggests a fight or an embrace. The painting focuses on the strength and physicality of both subjects.
Bruno Landi's style in this work combines several modern influences. The reference to Cubism is clearly evident in the decomposition of bodies into geometric planes. This technique creates the effect of seeing the subject from multiple angles simultaneously. The color palette is sober and earthy, with brown, gray, and ochre tones that contribute to a sense of concreteness. The work falls within the Informal movement, as Landi uses color in an unconventional, almost material way, with energetic brushstrokes and incisive marks that enhance its expressiveness.
Born in Rome in 1941, Bruno Landi developed his artistic language while studying at the Academy of Fine Arts under masters such as Pericle Fazzini. Frequenting the vibrant cultural scene of Via Margutta and spending time in Paris in the 1950s, he absorbed the radical ideas of Cubism and Abstraction. Returning to Italy in 1964, he embraced Art Informel, a movement that profoundly influenced his pictorial approach. Landi's mature work, as this work demonstrates, is distinguished by its compositional solidity and the dynamism of its figures. His works have been exhibited at major international events, establishing him as a leading figure on the Italian and international art scene.
