Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as an independent subject began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers were depicted not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also became a way of interpreting reality.
This lithograph is an excellent example of the work of the engraver Bruno da Osimo. The graphic style is typical of the school of Adolfo De Carolis (fundamental to our artist's development), which seeks a classical elegance and harmony yet reflects the refinements typical of Art Nouveau. Indeed, the black line is thick and bold, bringing the objects to life with a distinctly decorative feel. Bruno da Osimo, due to his excellent technique, can be considered one of the masters of the art of engraving.
Bruno Marsili, known as Bruno da Osimo, was born in the Marche town in 1888 and passed away in Ancona in 1962. He was a master of the art of woodcut engraving. He graduated from a technical school where he began teaching. In 1918, his meeting with Adolfo De Carolis was crucial. As a woodcut artist, he participated in several exhibitions and created illustrations for famous publications such as Eroica or Le Aquile Feltresche (1927) and those for Oscar Wilde's The Young King (1928).
