Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
In this painting, the painter Bruno Vacchiano seems to be harking back to the avant-garde movements of the early 20th century. There are, in fact, direct references to the Expressionist school, in the advanced formal synthesis underscored by thick black lines, and also to Cubism, in the geometric construction of space, perceived from multiple perspectives and different viewpoints. The painting's overall color palette also recalls Picasso's Blue Period.
Bruno Vacchiano was born in Naples in 1933. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in his hometown under the guidance of Emilio Notte. While still in his twenties, he gained great popularity by participating in various exhibitions both nationally and internationally, especially in the 1950s. He devoted himself primarily to religious subjects. His paintings are preserved in churches in Leeds, Yorkshire, England.
