Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The artist Claudio Martusciello focused his pictorial production on genre scenes dedicated to the world of peasants and commoners. His works thus represent a perfect fusion of socially charged, genuinely realist and popular art with a highly refined and imaginative narrative.
The painting embodies the distinctive characteristics of a genre scene, not only because of its subject matter—a folk tale—but also because of the painter's objective and highly didactic language. The work's approach is figurative, and Martusciello demonstrates his skill in achieving a perfect naturalistic rendering in a richly detailed representation. Nevertheless, the painter does not shy away from using lively hatching to ensure greater freshness in the execution. In this work in particular, he employs a smear technique to achieve a sense of immediacy and to better exploit the expressive qualities of color and brushstrokes.
Claudio Martusciello is a painter with a very classical conception of painting, expressed in a figurative language based on a perfect naturalistic rendering. His technique, however, displays painterly traits that give his works a particularly lively feel.
