Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
The work is representative of a thematic thread pursued by Livorno painter Cafiero Filippelli, which focuses on the depiction of the popular life of the city of Livorno, its countryside, and its maritime tradition. Formally, the distinctive features of the Livorno school, of which Cafiero Filippelli is a distinguished exponent, stand out. It is the densely colored stain that constructs the subject, giving the brushstroke a certain structural value. Macchiaioli painting allows the artist to perfectly modulate the surfaces, capturing all the reverberations of light and reflections on surrounding objects, in a faithful yet lively and vibrant representation. The surface is unified in a tonal coherence of predominantly cool colors.
Cafiero Filippelli was a painter from Livorno who lived between 1889 and 1973. He trained at the Academy of Florence, coming into contact with Giovanni Fattori and developing his own language in line with the Tuscan Macchiaioli tradition. Cafiero Filippelli was a prominent member of the Gruppo Labronico and participated in several editions of the Venice Biennale and the Rome Quadriennale. His favorite subjects were lamp-lit interiors, but he also embraced crowded, light-filled seascapes.
