Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. The "seascape" in particular is a recurring theme among artists. First, for the lyricism implicit in views overlooking the sea or in romantic images of small harbors. Second, because the depiction of aquatic surfaces allows painters to give free rein to their chromatic flair, thanks to refined interplays of reflections and reverberations.
The work is representative of a thematic thread pursued by Livorno painter Cafiero Filippelli, which focuses on the depiction of the popular life of the city of Livorno and its maritime tradition. Formally, the distinctive features of the Livorno school, of which Cafiero Filippelli is a prominent exponent, stand out. It is the densely colored stain that constructs the subject, giving the brushstroke a certain structural value. The stain technique allows the artist to perfectly modulate the surface of the water, capturing all the reverberations of light and the reflections of surrounding objects in a faithful yet vibrant and vivid rendering. The surface is unified by a tonal coherence of predominantly cool colors.
Cafiero Filippelli was a painter from Livorno who lived between 1889 and 1973. He trained at the Academy of Florence, coming into contact with Giovanni Fattori and developing his own language in line with the Tuscan Macchiaioli tradition. Cafiero Filippelli was a prominent member of the Gruppo Labronico and participated in several editions of the Venice Biennale and the Rome Quadriennale. His favorite subjects were lamp-lit interiors, but he also embraced crowded, light-filled seascapes.
