Description of the work
Description of the work
This print from the engraver's workshop of John Cousen reproduces William Turner's work "Calais Pier, with French Fishermen Going Out to Sea, and the English Mail Boat Arriving (Calais Pier)" made in 1803 and preserved at the National Gallery in London.
This beautiful color print impeccably presents the work of the great English artist Turner, demonstrating his early phase, still rooted in the Romantic style. The scene is depicted dramatically, with the group of fishermen at the mercy of the storm surge.
The print comes from the workshop of John Cousen (Bradford 1804–1880 London). A draftsman and engraver, he distinguished himself above all for his reproductions of works by Turner and Stanfield. His workshop boasts a vast production of geographical views and book illustrations.
