Description of the work
Description of the work
In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic movements. However, when an artist's goal is to depict an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is also charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. Symbolism and Expressionism are emblematic stylistic movements in their conceptual interpretation of reality, with an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic interpretation in the use of color. At the heart of Giovanni Cappelli's work is the human figure, depicted in a variety of realistic and everyday situations, yet always transfigured in a strongly existential poetics.
In Giovanni Cappelli's works, the human figure always appears isolated in large, open spaces with a metaphysical feel. It is often depicted as if folded in on itself, to bring out internal contrasts, and this folding is emphasized by the presence of complex draperies. This is one of the defining themes of Giovanni Cappelli's work, developed in a series of lithographs. The subjects, rendered with a synthetic line that delineates their forms quickly and in an almost abstract manner, are confronted with the complexity of the draperies, which, in turn, have an extremely complex, almost mechanical structure. Their folds, emphasized by a strong plasticity, unfold in a non-unique space, determined by the presence of multiple guiding lines.
Giovanni Cappelli was a painter from Cesena, born in 1923 and died in 1924. He can be considered a representative of the Cesena school of painting that, led by Alberto Sughi, placed the everyday life of existence at the center of its research, transfigured into a complex existential guise. His career, like Sughi's, developed primarily in Milan, where he gained national recognition with a large number of exhibitions.
