Description of the work
Description of the work
The clown was a popular subject among genre painters of the 1970s and 1980s. Many artists dedicated much of their careers to depicting this theme, Romano Mussolini being a prime example. Typically, the interpretation of this subject is similar for all artists who tackle it: the clown appears with his makeup designed to evoke laughter and hilarity, but instead displays a melancholic expression. This contrast is intended to spark an empathetic dialogue with the viewer.
The stylistic approach to the subject can be likened to the Naïve movement. The Naïve artist is by definition self-taught, someone who hasn't attended an art school but has found inspiration within themselves. Stylistically, this translates into figurative painting that offers a simplified interpretation of reality, with infantile and unconsciously primitivist overtones. However, even the Naïve artist, in his spontaneity, possesses a self-awareness that leads him to develop a very specific aesthetic language, distinguishing it from amateurism. CarbAntony's style, in particular, is distinguished by a rather cursive approach and a colorful palette.
Antonio Carboni, a painter originally from Villarotta di Luzzara, who passed away in 2004 and known by the pseudonym CarbAntony, embodies the naive painter in every sense of the word. Not only in his artistic language, but also in his itinerant painter. A traveling painter, he traveled in his colorful car, which he used as a veritable painting studio. A biography entitled "Carb...Antony, the Courage of Freedom," edited by Claudio Gobbetti, is dedicated to Antonio Carboni.
