Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as a subject in themselves began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers began to appear not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also becomes a way of interpreting reality.
Carlo Aimetti's landscapes, still lifes, and floral compositions demonstrate how this artist, throughout his career, achieved post-Impressionist maturity. The composition is entirely constructed through color, and the brushstrokes have a notable structural value. The painter's aim, therefore, is not to capture the sensory aspect of the flowers, but to capture their very essence, their substance. To this end, the brushstrokes, rich in texture, intervene, breaking down the space into different planes despite the simplicity of the representation, recording the vibrations of light and life within the subject. Thus, within a substantially two-dimensional surface, compressed in the foreground, the objects are constructed by the artist with large, dense brush strokes or more calligraphic strokes. Aimetti also uses an even more substantial brushstroke, which distributes the color evenly in relief. Chromatically, the entire surface of the work is blended with a unifying palette. Light, luminous tones prevail, typical of Carlo Aimetti's production.
Carlo Aimetti was born in Bisuschio in 1901 and passed away in Milan in 1987. A student of Felisari at the Accademia Ambrosiana in Milan, he devoted his entire life to landscape painting, depicting mountains, lakes, seascapes, parks and gardens, and flowers in all their splendor with refined technique. Above all, he interpreted, with impressionistic vision and great love, his native land, the Ceresio and Intelvi Valleys. Among Aimetti's talents, beyond painting, was his passion and sensitivity for music: a master violinist and organ player, he studied at the Milan Conservatory, where he distinguished himself in several sacred music concerts.
