Description of the work
Description of the work
The work can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious subjects. The Impressionists, in particular, favored subjects related to modern life in urban and bourgeois settings, while in Italy, movements such as the Divisionists and the Macchiaioli focused on themes related to work and life in the fields. Carlo Balestrini is close to this tradition, especially the Divisionist one, at least in terms of subject matter. His pictorial production consists primarily of scenes of country life, dedicated to work in the fields, where the landscape also plays a prominent role. In fact, generally speaking, in his works the subjects, of small dimensions, occupy a very small space, while a large part of the composition is given over to the vastness of nature.
The painter Carlo Balestrini, although close to Divisionist painters such as Pellizza da Volpedo and Giovanni Segantini in his social themes, differs stylistically. Indeed, his language harks back to a late Romantic era in which genre scenes were still conceived according to a classical composition, yet simultaneously sought a modern execution based on the complexity of perception inherent in the human gaze. Indeed, his entire style is characterized by a lively and dynamic pictorial style, rich in atmospheric and luminous vibrations. Specifically, in the present work, we note an even more pronounced tendency toward this direction, so much so that the painting takes on an almost post-Impressionist quality. The painter places great emphasis on an extremely synthetic rendering of the subject. The plain is delineated with a powerful interweaving of long diagonal strokes, while the cloudy sky is charged with thick, dense brushstrokes of color. Everything expresses a character of extreme immediacy that however goes beyond the simple sensitive data in a performance that decisively bursts into the emotional and spiritual level of the agricultural world.
Carlo Balestrini was a Milanese artist, born in 1868 and died in 1923. He trained at the Brera Academy, where he studied under Bertini, and attracted attention at the Milan Triennale with one of his masterpieces, "The Death of Abel," in 1897. He later specialized in themes related to the countryside and provincial suburbs, adhering to a veristic aesthetic but with a constant experimental approach in his pictorial approach. He was a regular exhibitor at Milanese exhibitions, but also enjoyed success in Venice and Florence. Many of his works are held in important collections in Milan and beyond.
