Description of the work
Description of the work
The work depicts St. Mark's Square in Venice, seen from the pier. The perspective lines converge toward the tower, which, in Brenna's imagination, is transformed into a female figure, similar to an ancient warrior goddess.
The work is a perfect example of Brenna's metaphysical approach. The artist often chooses unusual angles, as in this case, where the perspective is strongly foreshortened from bottom to top. The colors are soft, varying shades of blue, with a stark contrast provided by the gold leaf-like spire.
Carlo Brenna (Milan, February 11, 1935) is a Milanese painter and sculptor of metaphysical-surrealist expression, who trained at the Liceo Artistico and the Brera Academy of Fine Arts. After graduating as a graphic designer from the Umanitaria, he devoted himself entirely to art, favoring fresco painting alongside sculpture since the 1970s. His works, exhibited in numerous Italian and European galleries, are included in important public and private collections. At the heart of his research, marked by Renaissance references, are the female figure and a constant investigation of the mystery of existence through form, perspective, and light.
