Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography developed in this work addresses an important concept in the poetics of "return to origins," which also shaped Carlo Carrà's artistic production. The fundamental idea is that contemporary art should not create new images, but rather that the artist should select them from the past, as if it were an ideal museum, arrogating to himself the freedom to rework them into creative compositions. In particular, the subject of this work is inspired by a conscious quotation drawn from ancient, Renaissance, and seventeenth-century art.
Art, saturated by avant-garde experimentation, must necessarily return to its origins, and this is also confirmed by its formality. This presupposes the use of a figurative language faithful to the sensory element. The painting in question has a sketchy character, and the artist adopts a more cursive, dynamic, and synthetic language.
The work bears the signature "C. Carrà" at the bottom left. A painter born in Quargnento in 1881 and who died in Milan in 1966, Carrà was one of the most important figures in 20th-century Italian painting. He initially joined Futurism, drafting a manifesto with Filippo Tommaso Marinetti and Luigi Russolo in 1909. From 1915 onwards, Carrà felt the need to abandon the themes of dynamism and progress. In Ferrara, he met De Chirico and Savinio, and with them he defined the theoretical principles of Metaphysical Art. The third turning point in Carlo Carrà's career came in 1919 when he joined the movement promoted by the magazine Valori Plastici, which brought him into more direct contact with reality, developing the sense of magic that is typical of his later work.
