Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Carlo Corsi's landscape work is essentially expressionist. Reality is interpreted in an extremely synthetic manner, with a remarkable exercise in reduction. The surface is completely two-dimensional, with no concessions to spatial depth. The landscape is constructed through a layering of dense, almost material color. The hues themselves have no connection whatsoever with reality, lending themselves to a more spiritual than naturalistic interpretation. The composition is constructed on overlapping chromatic zones, in a fluid and dynamic pictorial surface. The execution is so synthetic that it points towards Abstract Expressionism.
Carlo Corsi (Nice, 1879 – Bologna, 1966). He moved first to Bologna and then to Turin, where he attended the Academy of Fine Arts, coming into contact with Giacomo Grosso. In 1912, he was invited to the Venice Biennale (where he would participate several times until the 1958 edition, with a room reserved for him and an introduction by Francesco Arcangeli). In 1913, he participated in exhibitions in Munich, San Francisco, and the First Roman Secession Exhibition (the first of a long series). In 1953, he won a purchase prize at the first Spoleto Prize.
