Carlo Crispini - Roofs

The graphic subject presented by Carlo Crispini is a form of graphic art in which, through specific artistic processes, a certain number of drawings can be reproduced. The most well-known techniques are lithography, silkscreen, aquatint, etching, and so on. These techniques take on value when the artist brings his graphic and artistic expertise to them, not to be confused with prints. In this case, Carlo Crispini offers a graphic that depicts the roofs, perhaps influenced by his own experience, of the city of Bologna, a city dear to the artist. The design aspect dominates in this work.  The artwork has an excellent aerial perspective, where the artist highlights the city's rooftops and buildings. Besides the color scheme, ranging from brown to terracotta, the drawing aspect seems to be the most important aspect on which the painter focuses, meticulously analyzing the breakdown of the cubes and squares that compose the urban landscape. This focus is also evident in the careful depth of the planes, emphasized by the chiaroscuro effect. Ferrarese artist Carlo Crispini was born in Pontelagoscuro in 1902. He trained as a painter at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, where he graduated with a degree in Architecture. He graduated in 1925, but began exhibiting his work as early as 1924. Having moved to Forlì in 1941, he devoted himself to teaching drawing and painting. He continued to exhibit in Forlì, Clusone, Cesenatico, Riccione, and several times at the "Campigna" gallery in Santa Sofia. The artist also spent longer periods in other parts of Europe, exhibiting his work. In his later years, he moved to Bologna, continuing to devote himself to painting, where he died in 1982.
