Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

As we can see in this watercolor work by Carlo Fontana, the landscape theme becomes a pretext for reconstructing the world through its perception and thus reducing it to pure forms and pure colors. Perceptible reality, then, is subjected to a significant process of synthesis, but also to expressionistic deformation. The entire landscape is reduced to a series of chromatic overlays that, in this case, exploit the qualities of diluted color. In this way, the perception of reality is transfigured into a complex interplay of chromatic balances and refined dissonances. The palette favors aggressive, almost violent colors, referencing the Expressionist tradition. The exercise in reducing and abstracting reality crushes the pictorial space into a two-dimensional surface. However, we can note how the chromatic fields are arranged on overlapping planes that presuppose a complex conception of space.
Carlo Fontana was born in Naples in 1951; he lives and works in Casier (TV). After completing his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, Fontana paints everyday forms and objects, shapes and archetypes of the Mediterranean world, illuminated by a dazzling light, broken down into rainbow colors through a faceted structure, in a thick, luminous, and dense painting, achieved using pigments dissolved in boiled linseed oil.
