Description of the work
Description of the work
The clown was a popular subject among genre painters of the 1970s and 1980s. Many artists dedicated much of their careers to depicting this theme, Romano Mussolini being a prime example. Typically, the interpretation of this subject is similar for all artists who attempt it: the clown appears with his makeup designed to evoke laughter and hilarity, but instead displays a melancholic expression. This contrast is intended to spark an empathetic dialogue with the viewer. The clown has also been favored by many painters for another formal reason. Indeed, his flamboyant makeup and colorful clothing offer painters a pretext for creating original color harmonies.
Carlo Saccardi's artistic language tends to minimize phenomenal reality, but this exercise in reducing sensory data helps the artist go beyond the appearance of things and grasp their true essence. What remains is the spiritual and emotional concentration of the subject with which Saccardi seeks to connect, eliminating any formal frills and leaving only a pictorial trace to identify the subject. This trace consists of vigorous and gestural brushstrokes, with a dense, material consistency, which characterizes Saccardi's artistic practice with a decidedly Expressionist vein. This painter's palette is also consistent with an Expressionist aesthetic: his colors transcend reality to acquire a spiritual and emotional significance.
Carlo Saccardi was born in Montebello della Battaglia in 1921 and died in Milan in 1997. His artistic output is distinguished by a vigorous expressionism expressed through bold, textured brushstrokes. His works have a strong existential connotation. Among the subjects that made him best known are groups of figures portrayed from behind.
