Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with research into space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; up to the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. The Bergamo-born artist Carlo Di Stefano specializes in the reproduction of woodland landscapes. The forest is the
favorite subject of this painter who favors a stylistic register that blends expressive lyricism with a perfect naturalistic rendering.
Carlo Di Stefano is a typical representative of academic painting. His formal quality is remarkable and refined in his depictions of landscapes, rendered with perfect naturalism. The composition, as is often the case in his work, is compressed in the foreground, leaving little room for spatial depth. There is a precise atmospheric fusion, thanks in part to the use of a quicker, more cursive line in the description of certain details. A recurring element in Carlo Di Stefano's woodland landscapes is the presence of a body of water, whose surface reflects an opaque light, with silvery (as in this work) or golden reflections. This light expands across the entire pictorial space, characterizing the landscape with diaphanous gleams. In this way, the naturalistic depiction acquires a strong magical and spiritual component.
Carlo di Stefano is a painter originally from Bergamo, where he was born in 1927. His work stands out for its depictions of intricate forests, rendered with great naturalistic precision. However, his research has focused particularly on the light that pervades these landscapes and imbues them with a magical poetic aura.
