Description of the work
Description of the work
Paintings depicting sailing ships can be considered part of the genre scene group, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. In particular, the depiction of simple sailing ships, or other vessels, outside the historical context of a naval battle, began in the 17th and 18th centuries, influenced by travel and exploration of new continents.
This interpretation of the sailing ship by artist Carlos Valles is grounded in an expressionism of color. The structures of the vessels are remarkably synthesized through a composition of lines that define their forms in transparent overlays. The limited space thus appears highly complex, traversed by a frenetic rhythm of gestural brushstrokes. Amid this frenzy, however, Carlos Valles manages to maintain perfect compositional balance thanks to the distribution of color. Indeed, although the chosen hues are excessive in their expressionist aesthetic, they are calibrated according to perfect relationships of calculated correspondences and contrasts.
Carlo Alberto Valles was an Italian-Argentine painter, dancer at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo, and a character actor in Fellini's films. As we can see from an analysis of this work, the artist stands out for his expressionist interpretation of reality, based on a remarkable synthesis and a frenetic rhythm of lines and colors.
