Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as a subject in themselves began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers began to appear not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also becomes a way of interpreting reality.
Artist Carmela Maestroni's aim is to offer a simplified interpretation of reality, seeking new values of purity in representation. For this reason, her painting style can be described as naïve, yet it expresses itself in a highly classical and traditional manner. Her language is essentially figurative and finds its broadest expression in the traditional genres of landscapes, still lifes, and floral compositions. However, the artist manages to infuse tradition with her originality and personal touch, precisely through her pursuit of purity of representation that defines her style. In practice, this is expressed in a fluid technique that resolves subjects with a few, quick but incisive strokes. Objects almost dematerialize in the lightness of the glazes. Even in terms of color, the artist favors decidedly pale tones, full of light.
Carmela Maestroni was a Lombard painter, born in Ponte San Pietro in 1898 and died in 1987. Both in her choice of subjects and her execution, we can say that Carmela Maestroni moved within the realm of classical, figurative art, yet displayed a certain naïve approach to her compositions. Her desire to achieve lightness and simplicity in representation is evident, with the aim of imbuing her artwork with primordial values of purity and innocence.
