Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Carmelo Comes is a painter deeply connected to nature and the countryside, whose lyrical power he senses. He seeks to transfer this power to canvas. His approach to the representation of his subject is realist. But the power of his color is truly remarkable: his dense, rich brushstrokes express a pictorial approach rooted in the earth. Light invades the space and reflects on objects, bringing them to life.
Carmelo Comes was a Catanian painter born in 1905 and died in 1988. He was also a ceramist. Passionate about painting from an early age, he worked in a variety of jobs to pay for his studies, and in his spare time he painted on makeshift supports. Gradually, he gained popularity, and his works began to circulate in the Catania area. The pinnacle of his success came when he was invited to the 7th and 9th Quadriennale Nazionale d'Arte in Rome, as well as the Venice Biennale (1950 and 1956).
