Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; up to the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. In Carmelo Consoli's landscape views, the aspect of everyday life, of realism, prevails.
A candid and sincere portrayal of everyday life in a city or countryside. Human presence is ignored, and the artist lets the buildings and nature speak for themselves, protagonists of a direct narrative unfiltered by idealization.
The artist Carmelo Consoli's style is characterized by a fully mature, post-Impressionist approach. His compositions are all constructed through color, and his brushstrokes have a notable structural value. The painter's aim is not to capture the tangible details of the landscape, but to capture its very essence, its substance. To this end, the brushstroke, rich in texture, intervenes, breaking down the space into different planes, despite the simplicity of the representation, recording the vibrations of light and life on the subject. Thus, within a substantially two-dimensional surface, compressed in the foreground, the objects are constructed by the painter with broad, dense brushstrokes that overlap. Chromatically, moreover, the entire surface of the work is blended with a unifying palette, usually tending toward brown or gray, contrasting with the intense blue of the sky or sea.
Carmelo Consoli was born in Rome in 1940 to Sicilian parents. From a very young age, he demonstrated a profound passion for art, so much so that in 1958 he made his first public appearances in the evocative and stimulating setting of the Via Margutta Fair. He studied humanities and art, then continued his study of the figure with L. Ciavatta and specialized in painting at the Spanish Academy in Rome. In 1966, Consoli was invited to Paris to represent Roman painters. He stayed there for a long period of study. From 1967, he began to reside in various locations in southern Italy, and numerous exhibitions and shows established his definitive success. In 1971, he returned to Rome, where he continued his activity with ever-increasing success, until 1976, when he settled permanently in Umbria, just outside Perugia. Nearly fifty years of rigorous and cultured artistic activity; over two hundred solo exhibitions, participation in group exhibitions and competitions; countless awards and critical acclaim have marked Carmelo Consoli's career.
