Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
In this pair of lithographs, we can admire Alberto Cavallari's remarkable skill in engraving. The plasticity, the exaltation of formal values, which led to the expressive deformation of the human figure in painting, is further accentuated through the use of graphic line. Thus, we can see how the subjects take on an almost caricatural aspect in this intense effort at expressive exploration. Formally, we note a remarkable drawing technique. The line reproduces the physiognomic features, exaggerated and enlarged, with extreme precision.
Alberto Cavallari was born in Bondeno in 1928 and passed away in Modena in 2016. Having survived the traumatic experience of the concentration camps, he attended the Dosso Dossi high school in Ferrara and moved to Modena in 1960, where he devoted himself entirely to painting. His research, influenced by his concentration camp experience, focused on the suffering and deformed human figure. For several years he collaborated with Carlo Rambaldi. In 1974, the municipalities of Modena and Ferrara invited him to organize a graphic design retrospective, "From the German Concentration Camps to the Po Delta," which was highly successful. He was a regular participant in major collective art events (over 200). He held around fifty solo exhibitions.
