Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

As we can see from an analysis of this extremely exemplary work, Cavalli's conception of landscape is essentially expressionist. The artist remains anchored to a figurative representation of the subject, but this representation is not aimed at a naturalistic rendering. Indeed, the artist transcends the sensory element in favor of a notable emotional, almost spiritual tension within the landscape. For this reason, the objects are subjected to a marked formal synthesis through a very dense, at times material, layering of paint. The figuration is compressed and deformed in a non-univocal space, constructed along multiple directional lines. Even the artist's palette reflects the desire to transcend the purely sensory element. With a predominance of blue and violet hues, the painter decisively leans toward a subjective interpretation of the view.

In his approach to art, Cavalli demonstrates a profound connection with the historical avant-garde movements of the early twentieth century, and with Expressionism in particular. His pictorial style is remarkably synthetic, abstracting the forms of objects to achieve a powerfully emotional rendering of reality.
