Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. Cesare Gheduzzi's landscapes are distinguished by a sense of the sublime in the presence of nature, but in a more intimate version. His works are often conceived as large views in which the human presence, when contemplated, small and solitary, seems almost lost at the center of the work.
Cesare Gheduzzi's style, consistent throughout his work, is grounded in a keen sense of color and a direct, cursive application of color. With just a few touches of color, the painter manages to construct his subjects, ensuring a great immediacy in landscapes or reproductions from life. It can therefore be said that Gheduzzi's stylistic register undoubtedly stems from a distinct impressionistic influence, which, however, in this painting is taken to the extreme of immediacy and rapid execution. Thus, just like the Impressionists, Gheduzzi can capture the vibrations of light and atmosphere on objects, but, at the same time, he exerts a more accentuated synthesis of sensory data, achieving a highly lyrical representation of reality. Gheduzzi's palette reflects this lyrical intimacy with nature and reality, adopting a chromaticism that avoids excess while remaining respectful of the sensory element.
Cesare Gheduzzi was born in Crespellano in 1894 and passed away in Turin in 1944. The son and brother of painters, he initially approached painting as a self-taught artist, inspired by his interaction with his father Ugo and brother Giuseppe. After spending his early years in Crespellano, he moved to Turin in 1900, where his father dedicated himself to designing sets for the Teatro Regio. There, he met Carlo Follini, whose teachings would prove crucial to his development as an artist. Cesare devoted himself primarily to landscapes, which he reproduced faithfully and elegantly. In 1917, one of his works was included in the exhibition of the Società Promotrice alle Belle Arti and the Circolo degli Artisti of Turin, and in 1942, he presented several of his works at the Galleria Civica di Arte Moderna in Turin.
