Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture has always been a beloved subject for artists. From its earliest days, portraiture was reserved for great figures, emperors, sovereigns, and wealthy members of the aristocracy. Facial expressions, the desire to characterize a person's features while also emphasizing clothing and grooming, were always sought and explored through various pictorial techniques, from sculpture to painting. Over the centuries, especially towards the end of the 19th century and the mid-20th, portraiture increasingly established itself as a means of depicting everyday reality, also bringing to light the psychological aspect of the figure depicted. In Cesare Peruzzi's portraits, the intimate characterization is visible at first glance. Cesare Peruzzi's portraits exhibit the same peculiarity. Analyzing the truthful and everyday characteristics of reality, the soft, delicate, and cold colors depicted blend well with the woman's figure. Here too, the gaze is firm and rigid, regarding the viewer with detachment. The figure's proportions are well composed, and the nuanced color palette accompanies the drawing. It's no coincidence that painter Cesare Peruzzi appears to be outwardly sensitive to the issues of light within his works, even reaching a pictorial lyricism reminiscent of nineteenth-century painting. Indeed, his connection to Impressionist painting is evident, with a brushstroke that is fresh in color yet also features a well-distributed paint texture. Cesare Peruzzi was born in Montelupone, in the province of Macerata, in 1894. Throughout his life, he lived briefly in other Italian cities before settling in Recanati. He attended the Istituto Superiore di Belle Arti in Rome and completed his studies only after the war. Returning to Rome to complete his studies led him to the French Academy, where he had the opportunity to hone his techniques with expert teachers, honing his skills in life drawing and the male and female nude. His artistic debut came in 1915, when he debuted in Rome at the "Secessione" International Exhibition, exhibiting alongside artists such as Degas, Cézanne, Renoir, Guidi, and Casorati. From 1925 to 1935, the artist practiced watercolors and distinguished himself from the painting of the time. In 1928, the "Dictionary of Italian Painters" published by the "Dante Alighieri Publishing Company" listed him among the notable artists from the Marche region. The artist's career would be filled with solo exhibitions and major awards.
