Description of the work
Description of the work
The work is an abstract composition. "Abstract" derives from the Latin term "abstrahere," meaning to extract or draw out. The process of abstraction, in fact, consists of eliminating the particular and individual aspects of an object to derive a universal concept. From Kandinsky to Mondrian, from Pollock to Mirò, many painters have pushed the process of abstraction to the limit in their works, paradoxically creating pure forms and colors that do not exist in nature, or translating their emotions and instincts into images. Mariano Chelo is currently one of the leading exponents of abstract art in Italy, and his research focuses precisely on the relationship between perception and pictorial transposition.

This series of lithographs, created by Mariano Chelo and inspired by the signs of the Zodiac, are exemplary of the Sardinian painter's artistic approach. Formally, the artist's concrete approach to pure form and pure color draws him closer to Kandinsky's Historical Abstraction. However, and the chosen subject matter plays a significant role in this regard, these lithographs possess a powerful sign, a force of iconic and archaic imagery that draws them closer to Malevich's Suprematism. However, this aesthetic component is tempered by a certain playful and amused spirit that always accompanies Chelo's work, drawing him closer to the geometric magic of Paul Klee.
Mariano Chelo was born in Bosa in 1958. His artistic career began in 1969, initially focusing on landscapes, still lifes, and the human figure. From 1981 to 1990, he worked in advertising graphics. He later returned to painting, turning his attention to the languages of Cubism, Abstraction, and Surrealism. Starting in 1991, Chelo began exhibiting his work in a series of shows both in Italy and abroad. In addition to painting, Mariano Chelo is also involved in installations and performances, including computer-aided painting.
