Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws on an Informal aesthetic language. The devastation wrought by the Second World War left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge resulted in a total rejection of any visual language, which resulted in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material from which their works are composed.
Ciccio Capasso is an extremely eclectic painter who can move from figurative language to pure geometric abstraction. In this panel, he reaches the extremes of a staunch abstract expressionism. The composition is vigorously gestural and essentially composed of two elements. The background is a dense, textured base of color. On the surface, however, the painter's gesture emerges more forcefully, with the paint squeezed directly from the tube.
Ciccio Capasso was a painter and sculptor who lived in Scisciano (1922-1993). He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples and, upon completion, joined the Gruppo Sud. This group, which also included Barisani and Venditti, advocated an artistic language inspired by the avant-garde movements of Cubism and Abstraction. Capasso later left the group, preferring to return to figurative art and lead a more private life. This did not prevent him from exhibiting his work in numerous exhibitions, including abroad. His collection of paintings in Munich is well-known.
