Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central figure in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
The work is an example of Ciccio Capasso's famous plaster engravings, and in this case, his exploration focuses on the female form. The artist's exploration focuses on volume and movement. This particular work demonstrates how fundamental Capasso's classical training was to his career. The artist pursues a pure, harmonious ideal of beauty through the creation of balanced volumes, almost geometric within the composition, yet brought to life by a soft modeling that softens the forms. However, the expressionistic component that characterizes Ciccio Capasso's artistic production is not lacking. The material is treated in a gestural manner, with a strong symbolic component in the engraved mark.
Ciccio Capasso was an artist from Scisciano (NA), where he was born in 1922 and died in 1993.
He trained at the school of Striccoli and Giarrizzo, then of Monteleone and Rega. After the war, he joined the Gruppo Sud, alongside other high-caliber artists including Venditti and Barisani. He later distanced himself from mainstream culture and worked and developed his multifaceted artistic career in the studio/workshop in Scisciano, which also served as a hotbed of new artists who became his students, many of whom included Vittorio Avella. He taught Figure and Modeled Ornamentation at the Art School in Naples. He distinguished himself as both a painter and a sculptor, also inventing the graffiti technique on plaster.
