Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
Even in the portrait genre, Ciccio Capasso seems to lean toward a more synthetic style of painting, with a sharp, textured brushstroke. The image appears flat, entirely smeared across the surface, yet it is precisely the color that fills the subject with values, which are more expressive than plastic. As can be seen from the face, which is briefly treated, the painter is less concerned with physiognomic resemblance than with the communication of existential qualities. This is even more evident in the warm, enveloping blend of colors and textures that characterizes the figure and the space surrounding it.
Ciccio Capasso was an artist from Scisciano (Naples), where he was born in 1922 and passed away in 1993. He trained at the school of Striccoli and Giarrizzo, then at that of Monteleone and Rega. After the war, he joined the Gruppo Sud, alongside other high-caliber artists such as Venditti and Barisani. He later distanced himself from mainstream culture and worked and developed his multifaceted artistic career in his studio/workshop in Scisciano, which also served as a hotbed of new artists who became his students, many of whom included Vittorio Avella. He taught Figure and Modeled Ornamentation at the Art School in Naples. He distinguished himself both as a painter and as a sculptor, also inventing the graffiti technique on plaster.
