Flowers as a subject in themselves began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers began to appear not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also becomes a way of interpreting reality.

Cantimori's interpretation of the flower vase genre is very similar to his most distinctive painting style. His aesthetic is fundamentally figurative, but at the same time, he displays a certain tendency toward expressionistic brushwork. In this case, the buds, though full of form and volume, are treated with a thick brushstroke that synthesizes and dissolves the shapes: it is the life flowing through these flowers, the existence that already foreshadows their decay. The color is imbued with a warm, solar light, undoubtedly reminiscent of his experience in Africa.

Felice Cantimori, known as Cino, spent much of his life in Russi (1906-1993). He lived in Africa for a long time but returned to his native country in 1984. Throughout his career, he focused primarily on landscape painting. For a time, he was influenced by Futurism. His experience in Africa was crucial in inspiring him to fill his paintings with a warm, sunny light. Toward the end of his artistic career, he abandoned landscapes to devote himself to still lifes and flowers.
