Description of the work
Description of the work
The work can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The Impressionists, in particular, favored subjects related to modern life in urban, bourgeois settings. This type of picturesque subject recurs in the work of the artist Cino Cantimori, who lived in Africa for a long time, expressing a curiosity for an exotic dimension, for ethnic and folkloristic everyday life.
This work is very characteristic of Cino Cantimori's style, in which a figurative representation is resolved in a stylistic register with strongly expressionistic overtones. This is particularly evident in this work. Indeed, we can appreciate how the entire scene was depicted by exploiting the expressive potential of color. The drawn structure dissolves into a highly synthetic representation. It is therefore up to a lumpy brushstroke, dense with color and with a strong structural function, to construct the image. The painted surface transforms into a shifting mixture of dynamic chromaticism made up of warm and earthy tones, linked to the sensations gleaned from the African experience.
Felice Cantimori, known as Cino, spent much of his life in Russi (1906-1993). He lived in Africa for a long time but returned to his native country in 1984. Throughout his career, he focused primarily on landscape painting. For a time, he was influenced by Futurism. His experience in Africa was crucial in inspiring him to fill his paintings with a warm, sunny light. Toward the end of his artistic career, he abandoned landscapes to devote himself to still lifes and flowers.
