Description of the work
Description of the work
Cirano Castelfranchi enchants us once again with one of his city views. In this specific case, the subject is the hidden Milan of the Alzaia Pavese outskirts, characterized by its Naviglio, a theme the artist has already explored extensively and used in other works. The painting presents itself in all its serenity, in the extremely calm atmosphere of an everyday life, punctuated by the absence of people and the imperturbability of the water, which only partially reflects the cityscape. The glimpse the painter has created reveals a desire to look at the outskirts in a different light, and this "sun" bathing the view is intended to confirm this. Oil painting, which finds its distinctive feature in a vibrant and lucid application of color, in this case becomes material and rarefied, while still maintaining a defined sheen that delineates the urban complex and, in a certain sense, defines the shapes and objects depicted. The artist's pictorial tendency is to express, through richly textured brushstrokes, his personal sensibility, also conveyed by a decomposition of planes and light that gives balance to the painting. Cirano Castelfranchi was born in Genoa on July 2, 1912, but his adopted city was Milan, where he lived all his life. After attending the Brera School of Drawing, he subsequently approached oil and watercolor painting, developing a remarkable mastery of these two techniques. From 1934, the artist exhibited his works both regionally and nationally, culminating in 1942 when he was awarded a prize at the 1942 Italian Painters in Arms exhibition in Palermo. Numerous works are held in private collections in Italy and abroad, including New York, Paris, and London. His series of panels dated 1934 featuring views of Milan is of stimulating expressive quality. He died in 1972.
