Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The artist Cirino Pomicino focused his pictorial production on genre scenes depicting the world of peasants and the countryside. His works thus represent a perfect fusion of a socially charged, genuinely realist and popular art style, and a delicate rural landscape that exploits the open spaces of the countryside to imbue his works with a distinctive luminosity.
Cirino Pomicino is very attentive to a naturalistic rendering of landscapes and possesses a confident technique that enables him to faithfully convey what he sees on canvas. He captures the atmosphere perfectly, both in terms of the quality of the air and the light that permeates the space. The objects depicted, therefore, blend delicately with the surrounding space, thanks to a highly refined application of color that exploits diluted washes, typical of watercolor. For this reason, the composition is constructed through harmoniously juxtaposed patches of color. Indeed, Cirino Pomicino's works are also highly balanced compositionally, with the horizon line dividing the work into harmonious chromatic zones and the elements arranged according to principles of equilibrium. Given the immersion of the entire landscape in light, very pale hues prevail, ensuring a coherent chromatic unity across the painted surface.
The painter Cirino Pomicino displays a sophisticated technique rooted in classical tradition, yet applied to a modern interpretation of painting. He remains faithful to a concept of art based on the imitation of nature, and thus his canvases allow little subjectivity. His style is highly realistic, yet displays some impressionistic immediacy. His technique exploits the glazes and transparencies of watercolor to create a patchy composition imbued with chromatic harmony.
