Description of the work
Description of the work
Bringing yourself into a city, "the" city, is an operation that presupposes a profound knowledge of your own city, which belongs to you; that's not my case. I was born in the city but live outside, and from outside I can see and observe the city not for what it offers but for its structure. My city, what I perceive of the city, are new icons placed on top of, integrated into, the structures themselves, which seem to have replaced, in some cases, the aesthetics that constitute the architectural character and make each urban ensemble different, unique, and alive.
The city is a collection of colourful billboards, or rather, in a metaphysical projection, it is made of the same advertised products -ad infinitum-, so much so that people use to call a given product
place"
...near the Ferrarelle billboard...
." implicitly incorporating the advertising message into the
network of information that is useful for urban living.
tralari such as packets of biscuits, docolata, wagons of fairies, boxes of cameras, bottles of wine or
sparkling wine, cans, perfume bottles and so on.
And then cars as cell phones (or vice versa); because it is often by moving, especially in urban areas, better in historic centers, that we can show our technological culture to more people... Only to then desperately try to understand something by leafing through incomprehensible manuals without hope and secretly.
All products, mind you, are not essential, and some are barely necessary, but they are certainly only the palest shadow of a compulsive pursuit of satisfaction that, perhaps, is going in the exact opposite direction. Perhaps.
Meanwhile, behind the city, encased in nylon films like surrogates of memory, a leaden sky with warm sunset reflections: perhaps smoke, smog, or perhaps a past storm, or one approaching. The pattern suggested by the clouds is a reminder, a reminder of how art has always influenced human thought, even in certainly darker times but with other cultures. Mantengna's Deposed Christ: here perhaps a symbolic omen of the decline of faith, of all faiths.
