Description of the work
Description of the work
The work depicts Claire Jeanne Roberte Colinet's quintessential subject: the dancer in motion. Classical inspiration and her exploration of movement and dynamism lead Colinet to depict maenad figures, Arab dancers, and modern ballerinas.
Claire Jeanne Roberte Colinet's sculptural work is distinguished by a classically inspired artistic concept that begins with a harmonious and balanced composition. However, her exploration of dance leads her to distort this balance to enhance its almost exaggerated dynamism. Her figures perform almost exaggerated twists and turns, leaping and evolving. Thus, even within a fundamentally classicist spirit, where all movements are calibrated and harmonious, the work is imbued with a highly evocative drama.
Claire Jeanne Roberte Colinet (1880–1950) was a Belgian-born French sculptor who worked in the early to mid-20th century. Colinet frequently participated in the Salon des Artistes Francais and Salon des Independents art exhibitions in Paris. Her sculptures, most of which depicted beautifully figurative, energetic, and dramatic female forms, were exhibited posthumously at the Paris Salon for nearly 30 years.
