Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of the Centauromachy (battle of centaurs) dates back to classical times. Numerous examples of it can be found in Greco-Roman bas-reliefs. As a classical iconographic theme, it has obviously been revived over the centuries, especially during the Renaissance (a famous bas-relief by Michelangelo is housed in the Casa Buonarroti in Florence). In this case, Onesti offers his own fantastical interpretation in which a centaur is engaged in a battle with a unicorn.
Clario Onesti was a master of printmaking. As we can see, he maintained a highly classical conception of graphic art, preserving a great tradition. Thus, for Onesti, lithography possessed remarkable illustrative and didactic power: the composition was extremely dynamic and the technical quality impressive. The quantity and quality of the details were striking, in a technique that enhanced plasticity through a complex interplay of light and shadow.
Clario Onesti was born in Zibello in 1921 and passed away in Milan in 1997. He was a renowned master engraver and painter. He worked as an illustrator and cartoonist for Italy's most prestigious publishing houses. Among his most notable works are "The Pioneer" and "Intrepid." As an engraver, he trained with Maestro Giulio Vito Musitelli, director of the Carrara Academy in Bergamo. He received numerous awards and recognitions throughout his career.
