Description of the work
Description of the work
The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consists of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art the "Still Life" also becomes a way of interpreting reality, as it did for the Cubists or Giorgio Morandi.
In this work, artist Claudio Missaglia seeks to recontextualize a traditional genre like the still life with a distinctly contemporary sensibility. At first glance, this type of image, with its minimalism and sense of emptiness, resembles an Arte Povera installation translated into painting. Formally, Missaglia consistently employs a realist vocabulary, but his application conveys existential vibrations that characterize the objects with lyricism. The sense of emptiness is conveyed by the dark background, which stands out for its more textured application. It's almost like a monochromatic block, reminiscent of the poetics of Informal Art.
Claudio Missagia is an artist born in 1959 who lives and works in France. Missagia has had an extremely prolific career, exhibiting his work throughout Italy and Europe, in cities such as Milan, Bologna, and Paris. His works are held in collections such as Beddington Fine Art in Bargemon. Missagia has participated in the Affordable Art Fair in Singapore and London.
