Description of the work
Description of the work
Surrealist aesthetics emerged around the 1920s and encompassed all fields of artistic research. Specifically, in the visual arts, Surrealism sought to explore the human subconscious and translate it into artwork through a process of automatic writing based on dream analysis. Consequently, Surrealist artworks propose the representation of a dreamlike dimension, completely dissociated from reality. However, this representation often relies on a hyperrealistic formal rendering, precisely to paradoxically accentuate the illusory and ambiguous nature of the surreal dimension.

In this painting, artist Claudio Papa chooses to follow all the codified rules of surrealist art, drawing inspiration from great masters such as Salvador Dalí and René Magritte. From the very title, the artist explicitly speaks of a dream, meaning that the composition arises entirely from a process of automatic writing and an unconscious vision. This allows the work to take shape as a juxtaposition of heterogeneous and alienating elements in their simultaneity. Formally, Claudio Papa also adheres to historical surrealism, adopting a hyper-objective figurative language, thus fueling the visionary and illusory feel of the representation. Chromatically, the entire painting has a good coherence of blue and purple hues.
Claudio Papa is an artist originally from Maiori. He has a diverse and heterogeneous artistic output. He gained extensive experience abroad, in Paris, but also in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, and London. He has participated in major events including the Venice Biennale and the New York Art Expo.
