“In a complex and multi-ethnic society that will see these characteristics further increase, a key role for art is to present this complexity as a limited overview, for large groups, of how vast diversity is and how it can be revisited from a perspective of contribution, as a resource rather than an impediment to progress.
This series of people, the people, are captured in real moments, absolutely unconstructed, random and unplanned, and they present themselves to another person, the viewer, who looks at them from inside a box: a container, indeed, of fears, preconceptions, prejudices, a cardboard box that aims to explain how weak the cultural barrier is that the progress of time has transformed, from ancient and mighty stone walls, to paper, to cardboard.
And cardboard is a symbol, a concept of orderly preservation, with its regular shapes that fit together with other shapes in an absurd jumble of isolations; here the box is broken, and from the outside a person peers curiously inside and smiles, or waves, or sits in a colorless void like a limbo, waiting for the realization that they are part of a whole that must harmonize and not isolate itself. I have deliberately emphasized the elderly, women, and children because they are always the most objectified and subject to blackmail in a vision that spans time and latitude. But other social typologies are also present, even to excess, because reality is always superior to fantasy.
