Description of the work
Description of the work
Collection consisting of 22 prints
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the Classical era, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the female figure is an expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the female figure has also been a central figure in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism. Beyond the interest in the representation of the female figure, the subjects in this collection, in particular, demonstrate a typical "Belle Époque" taste for erotic genre scenes, as well as an eclecticism perfectly suited to the cultural context of the early twentieth century. In fact, artists of this era frequently used themes linked to distant geographical areas, used as a pretext for an ethno-folkloristic representation of typical costumes.
This collection of prints can truly be considered a perfect interpretation of the early twentieth-century genre scene, in all its codified rules. Each print, in fact, marvelously illustrates a scene in keeping with its era with extraordinary representational power. It goes without saying that, in printmaking of such a didactic scope, descriptive clarity must be an essential characteristic of the artistic process. Indeed, the works in this collection are characterized by a perfect naturalistic rendering, impeccable in the description of every single objective detail. This style can be described as academic, an illustrious descendant of that pompier painting that, between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in France, proudly opposed the innovations of Impressionism and later the avant-garde. All of these characteristics are found expressed in the prints in question. They are also characterized by a great softness of graphic line, through which each artist achieves a complete fusion of the objects within the coherent atmospheric space of the work. Extraordinary is also the narrative ability to invent situations and describe them with extremely detailed details.
The artists included in the collection are evidently artists with rigorous and extraordinary academic training, exponents of pompier painting between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
