Description of the work
Description of the work
In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic currents. However, when an artist's goal is to represent an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is also charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. Symbolism and Expressionism are emblematic stylistic currents in their conceptual interpretation of reality, with an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic interpretation in the use of color. All of Saverio Coluccio's sculptural production is based on a substantially figurative language. However, sensory data is reworked by the artist's perception, who has discovered a truly evocative expressive key, inspired by an abstract aesthetic aimed at exalting pure plastic values.
Saverio Coluccio is a master of marble sculpture. His extraordinary technical skill goes hand in hand with a pursuit of a coherent aesthetic that straddles figuration and abstraction. Coluccio generally begins with the human figure, remaining somehow connected to the recording of sensory data. But he distances himself from these when his works move toward an exaltation of pure plastic values, free from all contingent data. We can see this also in this beautiful sculpture, which begins with the definition of a face, almost expressionist in its essential physiognomy, but from this foundation the work develops into a harmonious interweaving of pure volumes. Thus, everything resolves into a sinuous, harmonious, and calibrated movement, which also exploits the exceptional quality of the extraordinary material Carrara marble, and the artist's skill in handling it. Aesthetically, the sculpture is striking, thanks to the complex interweaving of circular forms, which undoubtedly also has profound symbolic implications. The appearance is somewhat reminiscent of the links of a chain, somewhat reminiscent of the mechanomorphic abstraction of Umberto Mastroianni, of whom Saverio Coluccio was a student. However, we can say that Coluccio's work is dominated by a celebration of pure, smooth forms and curved, sinuous movements, which also draws him closer to Henry Moore.
Saverio Coluccio, an art teacher and student of Umberto Mastroianni, graduated in sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna in 1971 and teaches art history and sculpture. He lives and works in Quattro Castella (RE). He began his artistic career by founding Gruppo 70. During this period, he exhibited extensively nationally and created a work in the chapel of the Pensionato S. Giuseppe in Quattro Castella. From 1981 to 1985, he was the set designer for the Roccella Jonica International Jazz Festival. In 1986, he was the president and founder of the Arteinsieme Group of the Reggio Emilia Gramsci Club. In the early 1990s, in collaboration with Mario Guidetti (president of the 3rd District of Reggio Emilia), he founded an art gallery for Reggio Emilia artists in the headquarters of Confesercenti in Reggio Emilia. He was a member of the Culture Commission of the 3rd District of Reggio Emilia in the early 1990s. In 1990 he participated in the collective painting exhibition in Quattro Castella, experimenting with new information technologies known as "Computer Art". For about 10 years he dedicated himself to graphics and industrial screen printing. Among the many public works he created, we recall: the War Memorial in Puianello di Quattro Castella created together with Giorgio Romani (2004); the Monument to Solidarity in Quattro Castella (2006); the Rotonda della Pace with the boys from the SMS of Scandiano (2006); the Monument dedicated to Ancient and Modern Buildings in Arceto (2008); a Sculpture Symposium with two sculptures on the Roccella Jonica seafront (2008 and 2009); the sculpture to the sacredness of life at the Coviolo Cemetery (2014); the sculpture dedicated to the Carabiniere (2015); the small monument to Anita Garibaldi, Castello del Bianello in Quattro Castella (2016). In 2016 he participated in the International Sculpture Symposium in Weilburg, Germany and in 2017 in the painting and sculpture exhibition with Caterina Coluccio at the “Ottagono” Gallery in Bibbiano, Reggio Emilia.
