Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as a subject in themselves began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers began to appear not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also becomes a way of interpreting reality.
Concetto Pozzati's art can be defined as a surrealism dictated, however, by a cold compositional rationality. Even in this vase of flowers, for example, we can see how the subject is synthesized through a clear interplay of pure lines on a two-dimensional plane. The result is a graphic work of extreme elegance. In the decontextualized space of intense blue, the white line traces the subject's forms, while its plastic consistency is evoked with an even deeper blue. Spatial depth is hinted at in a decidedly abstract manner by the inclined black and orange plane, which creates a carefully calibrated contrast in the work's chromatic balance. Equally dissonant, yet with a certain dose of irony and playfulness, typical of Pozzati's art, the single white flower that gives the work its title stands out across the entire surface. Pozzati's surrealism, in its clean lines and electric colors, also draws on a lively pop vein.
Concetto Pozzati was born in Vo' in 1935 and passed away in Bologna in 2017. He began his career as an Informal artist, later moving towards Pop Art. His artistic language ultimately settled on a Surrealism with a graphic and rationalist approach. He first participated in the Venice Biennale in 1964, a participation that was followed by four more appearances (in 1972, 1982, 2007, and 2009).
